The settlers of Beaconsfield have forwarded a petition to the PostmasterGeneral, through the local Postmaster, Mr J. H. Stevens, praying that a weekly mail service be inaugurated between that township and Feilding. As the number of inhabitants in that district is now assuming fair proportions, the Minister may grant the prayer of the petitioners. The Wanganui Herald says: — We hear on good authority that the Government have decided on recommending the central railway route, Mr AJitchelson being prepared to stand by this route and recommend its adoption to Parliament. Wanganui at 4.15 yesterday afternoon for Fox ton was brought to a standstill near Fordell, something having gone wrong with the engine, r After about an hour's delay a start was made, and all went well 'till between Wangaehu, and Turakina, where the train had again to stop for the purpose of the engine being put to rights. Turakina was not reached till 8.23, two hours and twentj-fife minutes late. From that point apparently all went well, and the north' and i south trains crossed at Marton instead of Haleombe. The train from the south reached Wanganui at 11.15. one hour and ten minutes behind time. j
