The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, JUNE 5, 1884. Opening of Parliament

♦ Pakliament ■will meet to-day, and there is every expectation that it will be a day of surprises. A southern contemporary says that the position of parties is both contradictory and unprecedented, and the leaders, with the rank and file, are in the same unprecedented condition. Some obedient trustworthy souls there are who are quite ready to obey, but in the absence of masterful souls to order, their virtuous intention — obedience is the highest virtue — bears no fruit. The Government sits on its Benches wondering who is going to attack, and quite certain that if the enemy only unites, the attack is sure to be quite I successful. The condition is hardly favorable to the composition of a dignified Governor's speech. The enemy on the other hand are far from united. They would all like to pull down the quarry, but " What will he do with it ? " is the question that makes every man pause. Thus it comes to pass that the gravest uncertainty of action prevails. The situation is not amusing because it is so hopeless. The various parties and sections of parties are all agreed that the people alone can get ' them out of the difficulty. But if there are are no definite issues how is the deadlock to be avoided ? The only hope is in the appearance of a strong man of sufficient resource and power to make a pax*ty out of all the scattered elements. Whether such an one will appear remains to be seen.
