The Inland Railway
On Monday, May 29th, 1888, a public meeting of the residents of Feilding, and the settlers in the surrounding districts, was held in the Public Hall. At that meeting, a resolution was passed — " That the member for Mfcnawatu, the Hon. Walteb Johnston be requested to have an exploration made of the Oroua Valley route at once by a competent .engineer, in order that its merits be. folly ascertained." A year and a day'.' has passed since that resolution^ was presented by a deputaitibniri Wellington, arid after all the " weary waiting" and broken promises ! of the.; Government the survey party started on their expedition this afternoon. " Better late than never." It is not likely that the labors of the expedition will be very arduous, and a very short time ought to be sufficient to enable so experienced a hand to make a flying survey of the best line of country, the whole of Which is easy access, and the grades low. That Mr Rochtobt'b report- will be reaidy, to: present during the present session is "a consummation : devputly to '; be. wished." We must congratulate ourselves pn. the success that has at last attended our efforts to get thi? "smTey^rinade, we can assure our readers' -that it : has been a painful ; duty ta hold up the member for the Mahawatu, and Minister of Public Works, to scorn |for : toroken pledges in ■connecti<rti i therer vritfc: y-™?. \^.
