Local & General News.

Tbe banks will be closed on Saturday next, the Queen's Birthday. Mr Ballanee bas decided lo contest tbe Wanganui Beat at the next general election. His return is almost a certainty. The members of the Manchester Rifles Council will meet at the Stab office on Monday evening next at 8 p.m. The business is of importance. We have to acknowledge receipt of a complimentary ticket from tbe secretary of the Manawatu Racing Club for the Queen's Birthday Races. Archdeacon Edwards, of Dunedin, stated at a public meeting recently, that during a residence of twenty years in Dunedin, be bas not known such distress as at present exists. Sir "Win. Fox was a passenger by train to Westoe on Tuesday evening. Sir Wm. has now completed his labors in the West Coast Commission, and will proceed to England early next month.

The Borough Council will meet this evening at eight o'clock. The ball held by tho Feilding String Band, last night, in tho Town Hall was well attended, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. Two members ot the Rangiora School Committee have objected to'the children being dismissed at 11.30, and being recalled for half anjhour's religious instruction. A sale of Volcnnic Allotments was to take place in Aucklad yesterday. If this sort of thing goes on we may expect to hear of Storm Sections, and Earthquake Frontages, for sale in the empire city of Wellington. Mr Rees, having found the shed on the Corporation premises too circumscribed for his business, has removed to the Immigration Barracks, where he will carry on his coach building operations until his own factory has been re-built. The three reasons which a good woman presented for objecting to a minister were striking ones. She said that in the first place, he rend his sermon; in the second, he did not read it well ; and in the third place, it was not worth reading. Ask no woman her age. Never joke with a policeman. Do not play at chess with a widow. Never contradict a man who stutters. Be civil to rich uncles and aunts, your oldest hat, of course, for an evening party. Always sit next the carver, if you can, at dinner. Billy-go-by'em, is going to run on the Waneanui Race Course on the 26th insf Of course, it he wins anything, the second horse will claim the money as his disqualification has not been " purged" by the Feilding Jockey Club. The friends of the cause of Temperance are reminded that a tea meeting, in connection with the Independant order of Rechabites, will be held in the Good Templars Hall on Saturday afternoon. Also that an open meeting will be held in the Foresters' Hall at 8 p.m. **A contemporary plainly remarks that England spends six times more money on wars actual and possible, thhn she does on Education. Quite so, there never was an English boy yet that would'nt stand a fight or a thrashing, sooner than go to school- The boy is tho father of the man. Some Moa bones in an excellent state of preservation were recently found (says tho Hawke's Bay Herald) in the vicinity of Lake Taupo by a native named Wercwere. One of them is a leg-bone that once formed part of a very large bird. These relics of former times are now the property of Mr Axford, who has left them at out office. In calling attention to Mr Edwin Young's new advertisement, we particularly direct the notice of our readers to his tropical fruits now on view. The cocoa nuts are fresh and full of milk while the bananas and oranges are simply perfection, the apples and pears are of the best description and evidently been carefully selected from Ibe best markets. The inconsistency of some men's lives makes us smile. For instance, Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuits, and a notably holy man in many ways, was a famous duellist. If the Bible is true God Almighty forbids murder. "Thou shalt not kill 1" is the sixth commandment. And yet, Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, called out a man for denying the divinity of our Saviour, and run him through. The increasing proportions of cargocarrying steamers lost at sea, since the price of freights has rendered it almost impossible to sail them at a profit, is exciting considerable attention abroad. It is not the old and worthless vessels alone that mysteriously disappear, bnt those thatfthat are ranked as first class. All are fully insured, both ship and cargo, and it is said that it is found far more profitable to allow a vessel to founder at sea than to make her voyage — hence over loading and over insuring. The popularity of the Christy Minxtrel entertainment is evergreen, and we expect that the " Feilding Cork Brigade " will receive a full share of patronnge in the Public Hall on Friday evening. The splendid dancing of Mr John Turner will be in. itself a considerable attraction, and we believe the " challenge dance " will be a remarkably close contest between +hat performer and Mr J. Galbrail h. As the whole of the members'of the troupe are local men and individually popular, we have no doubt the attendance will be large. We learn the ball at the conclusion of the performance promises to be well attended. I The Auckland Star pays a left handed < compliment to Wellington when it saj's , it is a fact, though it may hurt i uckland's pride to admit it, that in pushing business on the West Coast of this island the Wellington wholesale firms display far more enter- , prise that the great Auckland trading firms. Compared with our mercantile houses, BOMt of the houses of she Empire City are very grim-crack con- : cerns, and trade on a capital that would be considered altogether inadequate here. Yet, despite these disadvantages their travellers are tonnd where Auckland's never think of penetrating, and, ns a result, they are rapidly acquiring a commercial connection in districts that properly should look to Auckland ns their emporium. It is time that (lie Auckland mercantile community woke up. The Feilding Variety .Company, as will be seen by advertisement and posters, is to give another of their popular ■ entertainments in the Town Hall on Saturday evening next, (he night of the Queen's birthday. The performance which they gave last Easter Monday

night was, it will be remembered, a great success, and although it was their initial appearance as a company, it proved their capabilities, and established a reputation as a very good amateur troupe. The programme for next Saturday in an attractive one, and we feel sure will afford a considerable amount of pleasure and amusement to the audience. The farce " Beautiful for Ever," aud the drama "Good for Nothing" are both highly laughable, while the songs, duetts, and the other musical portions of the bill of fare, are of an entertaining character. New scenery and stage properties have been provided, and no pains spared to afford a thoroughly enjoyable evening. We therefore hope and expect to see the company's efforts rewarded by another good house.
