RACING PIXTUEES. May 26— Wanganui J.C. Steeplechase Meeting. May 24— Palmerston Meeting. Notes by " Phocton." It seems a thousand pities that the Wanganui stewards should hare decided to postpone their steeplechase fixture till Monday, as a great number of people from the country districts would hare attended on Saturday next who will certainly not go on Monday, and the meeting will certainly suffer from.. a financial point of view. I hardly think it fair to owners, who in many eases-, have to bring their horses long distances ' to compete, to keep their horses, trainers, and jockeys two extra days in a place — well in Wanganui. It means very considerable extra expense to the people who really deserve most consideration, because they do and pay more towards ,the sport than any other class. If any at> teration of the date was advisable it certainly should hare taken place before* the acceptances came in. From the storekeepers' point of view, Saturday is admittedly not a good day, but the meeting having been fixed and entries' and acceptances received before: it was. even suggested that the day should W' altered, I think the real patrons- of thtf. sport should be considered before the 1 business people. '■ " ' ': -■•-.;'-*- For the Handicap, in spite of tsq\ " anchor " attached to him, it looks like a moral (on paper of course) for the top"-* weight, but if anything can upset the pot. (which will certainly be upon him should he go to the post fit and well) I think it will be Parnell or The Druid. I expect to see Clarence win with the other two mentioned ones in the places — both of them, I think, are too fast for old Mount, though it is (possible Dioraedes may roll into a place. Clarence must win the Grand Stand, barring accidents, and the Maiden will .- probably fall to Denbigh, if in good trim.' The^Bracelet is a race in which great interest will be taken and most of the starters will be backed (I should advise those interested in the sale of " gloves ". to lay in a stock in view of this event) and is the most difficult race on the programme to pick. However, those nearest at the finish will be, I think, Patent Safety, The Masher, and Home Bule and I have a preference for the first-named, partly because his steering apparatus is likely to stop on deck all the way round. The postponement at Wanganui will ensure a good attendance at Palmerston on Saturday next, where I like nothing •_ better for the Hurdles than old Skylark;. or Exchange (not knowing Scrutineer's movements). Whioi might crop up at < the right end, but I doubt it. The Maiden should fall to Awateaif - she is in anything like trim, though there are several candidates spoken of -as •' . " rough ones "—notably Exchange. . The Guineas will be a match, I thinlr, and an interesting one between Armourer and Ahua, though neither Dunk nor Blue Gown'can complain of their weights The flat — very flat — performance of Somnus at Waverley will prove sufficient to prevent anyone losing much money on him unless wonderfully improved. Armourer, Bine Gown, and Dusk are certainly the best three in the Flying, and as the " Gown " is such a Sunday raiment, should Dusk be well it will be another match. I tip the following ' horses for the different events i—
HUBULES. Skylark \ Exchange 3 - ; WWoi 3 Guineas Armourer 1 Ahna 2 Dusk ... 3 M AIDER. Awstea M ... 1 Excliange 3 Touch-and Go 3 FIiYIRO. Armourer 1 Dusk ... 3 Blue Gown ... ... ... ... 3
