Bulls Items

fiamt'oui own coebespondent.) Bulls, April 8. A series of cricket mat chits haye been arranged to be played between eleven picked men from this coast, as against' the various local clubs in. Hawke's Hay. during Eastsr week. Our. representatives. are aU 'good men, and no doubt with ordinary luck will give a good account of .-bean-stives.' They leave by to-night's train. Church affairs are still in a ferment. The Westryans are determined that the Uev Mr Worker, who has been transferred from the Sandon to the Marton district shall not be permitted to enter the Bulls church to preach, in consequence of some doubt as to the reverend gentleman's soundness on the church's principles, but ethers think it is more on the. part of Mr Gordon Forlong, by causing dissension amongst the Wesle/ans, to gather followers to his- views. The ABjjJicsS * minister the Rev Dodwell, is still attracting large congregations by his eloqaent|preaching. It is a pity there-, are not more of such preachers in the Anglican Church ; but the most attractive of all gifts, that of preaching, is totally ignored by * tbe majority of the Anglican clergy, and yet they wonder why the people do not attend church. Let them come and lake a lesson from the .Rev Mr Dodwell, ami do as he does, and they will never have to bemoan the poor attendance at their churches. At a meeting of the members of the Committee of the Harmonic Society it was unanimously decided to put Sullivan's "Trial by Jury " in practice, and that the piece shall be performed in character in about two months time. The Clifton Public Library have sent an order to Sydney for about fifty pounds worth ot new books. These will be very acceptable in view of the winter nights now fast approaching. The s.s. T_v- is expected to arrive tomorrow from Wellington with a general cargo. The trade at the port is gradually increasing.
