The Panama Canal
A correspondent Irom Panainn writes to a London weeklv ; — l.ver i-Hice thecurting ot the new canal was commenced the effect has been mosl marked on the inhabitants of thi* country. Fiom habits ot apathy, they seems to h ive acquired much ol' tlie enterprise of the illustrious engineer t 'ld mines hive been re-opened, and worked with more or less success, .md it is confidently expected that the cutting* will disclose new and very rich ones. Another industry, the pearl fishery, has been ino**; energetically pushed, aud with great success. A monster pearl was found recently, which rivals in size moss ot the historic ones. It is named tbe '• Le-seps," and takes its placeamongst ; he largest known to the world. I believe it has been senr to London to iJenson's .ho jeweller. Irade bus' received a wonderful impetus, aud tbe country owes much ro enterprising Frenchmen.
