Newspaper Work
Th(fr gossip writer for the Taranaki Re*-ald says : — <' The newspaper business is ver}' exacting on all connected with it, and pay is comparatively small, ihe proprietors risk more money tor smaller profits, and editors, reporter--, and printers work harder aud cheaper then the Ba*ue number of in .n in any other profession requiring the given amount of intelligence, training. and drudgery. The life may have its charms and pleasant associations scarcely known to the outside world ; bur. it has its earnest work und anxieties ai.d hours oi exhaustion which also are not known io those wlm think the business all fun. I'he idea that new«paperdoin is a charmed circle, where the favored members live a lite of ease aud free from care, and go to the shows on a free ticket, and exist oo presents sent from an admiring public, is an 'idea which should be exploded. Business is business ; and .he newspaper that succeeds is one which i» ru.-: on a square footin<_ — rhe same as banking, building bridges, or keeping an hotel or store."
