Edmund Yates has been sentenced to four months' imprisonment for libelling Earl Lonsdale in an article which appeared in the columns of the World. I A most disastrous fire occured to-lay 'in Paternoster Row. It raged for fully 1 fire hours, aud resulted in the destruction of several houses and immense I damage to property. The loss will, it is I expected, prove to be enormous. I It has transpired that H.R.H. the ' Duke ot Albany was willing to have accepted the Governorship ot Victoria, but that Her Majesty forbade him doing so. The Grand National Steeplechase Handicap, at Liverpool of 1,000 guineas, was won by Voluptuary, Frigate second, and Roquefort third. Gordon Pasha's letters from Khartoum show that the outlook at that city is very gloomy. He expresses himself as " hoping against hope." Arrangements have been made by the British Government for retaining possession of Souakim for some time. The Bank rate of discount has been reduced to 2£ per cent. The premises destroyed by fire in Paternoster Row were occupied by Messrs Pardon and Sons, printers, Fandel, Phillips, and Co., and Benjamin Williams' new warehouse.
