Manslaughter by a Medical Man
(per united press association.) Dunedin, This Day. At the Supreme Coart to-day, Dr Parry, of Kaiturigata. was charged with the manslaughter of Sarah Ann Cuthbertson. through malpractice in child* birth. The iury found that Dr Parry, in, attempting to deliver the tromnn, needlessly cansed a rupture, .from, which; the woman died. The evidence was that the defendant seemed id a drowsy condition as if recovering from some narcotic. ' Some women in the house deposed 'that in order to rouse him they washed his face, combed his hair, and changed his shirt. He fell off the sofa at one time, and they put him on it again. • Eventually they sent him out into the garden to get fresh air, but he did not return, and the patient died an houT after he left. The woman never was delivered. Several medical men were called, who gave evidence that cases of internal rupture had" occurred, but the theory set up by prosecution was that the rupture was caused by external' violence; and this the jury upheld by their verdict. His Honor sentenced tbe prisoner to four months without hard, labour?
