-• — — The building of the new Catholic Church was commenced last week, and is expected to be finished by about the middle of May. We hear that Mr Charles FitzHerbert met with a somewhat serious accident yesterday morning He fell from his horse, and sustained a very severe shaking, which will pr«[ ably render it necessary for him to lay up for some days.

The Marton Horticultura. Society has decided to have no Autumn Show this season, owing to the want of funds. A number of passengers went by train on Mondny morning to see and hear the Kennedy family in Wanganui. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Feilding Lodge of Odd Fellows will be hold this evening, at 8 p.m., at tlio Templars' Hull, Manchester street. ! Owing to the Assessment Court of the : Halcombe Town Board being held in that township to-morrow morning, the business of the R.M. Court here will not commence till 12 o'clock. The renowned modern Blondin, whose daring feats on the tight rope are the wonder of the Southern Hemisphere, is about to appear in Feilding. We are informed that he will appear on Manchester Square on Saturday next. The Oroua Licensing Committee met at Sanson on Saturday last for the purpose of electing a chairman, when the choice fell upon Mr James Bowater, the other committeemen present being Messrs Anderson and Tomlinson. A meeting of the stewards of the Feild ng Jockey Club was held at the Denbigh Hotel on Saturday evening last to receive nomination and elect officers for the course. A most satisfactory number of entries were received, and very efficient gentlemen elected as officers. In the Presbyterian Church to-morrow the choir will disperse sweet music and addresses will be given by several gentlemen. The secretary will also read the annual general report ami balance sheet. An evening's pleasure and instruction will reward any who remembers the occasion. The writer of a series of articles in our Marton contemporary describes Mr Gladstone, the English Premier, as looking old ! It is hardly possible for the veteran statesman — who has reached the allotted span of three score and ten— to look youthful. As will be seen by advertisement. Mr R. K. Shaw, from Hislop and Co., of Wellington, intends opening up as watchmaker and jeweller, next door to this office, the shop formerly occupied by Mr Hugh. A stock of first-class goods will shortly arrive, of which fur.her particulars will be announced. MrJ. C Thompson, cf the Cash Exchange, is, with his usual enterprise, again to the fore, his first shipment of autumn and winter goods having arrived. We regret that the new advertisement announcing the arrival of this splendid stock of goods was received too late for insertion in the. present issue, but it will appear in our next. The shooting season for native game for the Rangitikei and Wanganui districts has been gazetted as commencing from the Ist of March, instant. It is a strange oversight that the Manawatu district has been overlooked in this matter. The season for shooting native game is now virtually on, and the season for imported game is close upon us, but from recent Gazettes to hand no notice whatever is given as to when the season for either native or imported game commences in the Manawatu. The oversight is causing great disappointment to sportsmen. The Auckland Star says: — The consignment of Shropshire Downs rams by the Brenhilda were landed from that vessel on Feb. 26, and have attracted a great deal of attention. It is to the enterprise of the Auckland Stud and Pedigree Stock Company that the introduction of these sheep is due. They have been recommended by the most reliable London butchering authorities as the best class with which to cross the sheep of this colony to ensure good flesh making and wool giving animals. They have now been imported with the object of crossing the breeds, and the result of the experi ment will be awaited with no small amount of interest by our sheep farmers. Licensing Committees must be cautious how they act, and not allow their zeal to outride their discretion. The Mandeville Committee refused to grant the license of the Royal Hotel, Woodend, Canterbury, and a mandamus was granted by the Supreme Court, requiring them to sit again and re-consider the application. The costs amounted to £152, which four of the committee had to pay out of their own pockets, one of their number refusing to subscribe, as he had not been a party to the refusal. A few such costly lessons as this wonld render the honor of seats en Licensing Committees less sought after than at present. According to announcement a Feilding Juvenile Temple of the 1.0. G.T. was instituted on Saturday last. The juveniles met to the number of thirteen, and the~e were duly initiated by the Superintendent. Bro Hammond, after which the officers were elected, among the principal of which were Bro F. Worsfold, W.C.T. ; Sister L. Trevena, W.V.T. ; Bro WattsW.S. ; Bro E. Eade, W.T. ; Bro Hurdle W.C.; and Bro Robinson, W.G. The Superintendent then went through the working of the Temple, which was gone through very creditably by the juveniles, who themselves closed the Temple in a manner that would have done credit to many older Lodges. A tea being provided for them, the youngsters did full justice to the good things set before tbem, but the weather being very unfavorable there was only a small number of outsiders present. The Temple, we are requested to state, meet again on Saturday next at' 6 o'clock, when further initiations will take place, the par ents' consent being necessary,, or such Touched for by the proposes of candidates, admission being 6d eachv ..: - .-
