The new railway tariff, which comes into force on the 17th March, increases passengers' fares about ten per cent, outside of a radius of ten miles from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Du> edin, and Invercargill. Freight rates, while not so high as those of 1880, are higher than those of the present tariff, and the total increase is expected to yield £150,000 extri per annum. Blenheim, This Day. A public trial of Tomlinson and Hnyward's glycerine sheep dip was conducted by Mr C. P. Hayward to-day at Mr H. Redwood's farm, in the presence of a large gathering of flock-owners and local sheep inspectors. Great satisfaction with the result was expressed by everybody. Glsbobne, This Day. There diel here to-day, aged 83, an old colonist, well known throughout the colony, Mr A. S Br.iithwaite. In 1829 he made a locomotive engine in England, "The Novelty," which competed in the historical contest won by Mr Step henson's " Rocket." New Plymouth, This Day. News has \ een received from Donkin's party, who are prospecting for a route for the Trunk Railway to Auckland. He has penetrated nine miles through broken country, and so far succeeded in obtaining a fair route for a railway -line. He has one mile more to go before striking into open country. Donkin, by this, is establishing his claim in showing a prac ticable route through what was supposed to be an inpenetrable country. Wanoanui, This Day. James Peaples, who attempted suicide by taking a dose of " Rough on Rats" was this morning committed for trial at the Supreme Court next week. . Dun edin, : his Day. Dodson, a publican at Port ( halmershas called a. meeting ot his creditors. His liabilities are stated to be £16,00 . The New Zealand Drug Company's net profits for the year, with previous balance, are £16,474. After paying 10 per cent, dividend, £8.246 was carried forward.
