The police are malting inquiries in the matter. The Directors' report for the jear of the Dunedin Tramway Company shows n debit balance of £1234 15s. New Plymouth, This Day. A fire occurred last evening at the Sash and Door Factory which, however, was quickly suppressd. It originated from the flue of the boiler, which being overheated, caused the floor of the second floor to become ignited. It was soon put out, and not much damage was done. Gisbobne, This Day. The Gisborne Racing Club haTe bought from the Land Company a race course at a cost of £3000, and intend to spend £2000 on it. Wellington. This Day. Great changes are contemplated in the Public Works and Railway Departments in the direction of amalgama ions and Retrenchments. It in probable that amongst other reduc i-ms the establishment of the Engineer in Charge cf the Middle Island will be abolished. These changes will effect a saving of £4000 a year. Nelson, This Day. At the University Senate Mr Fitchett laid on the tuble the minutes of the convocation and a committee was ap ointed to consider them. On the motion of Professor Sh/md certain alterations were made in the ita u'e relnting to senior scholarships. A member »f the licensed victualling confraternity is busily engaged in getting voters' names placed upon- the various electoral rolls, and the temperance people are taking the same precautions. King Tawbaiao held his last meeting, pri r to goin;i to England, at Whatwliutihoe yesterday. Topia and hewi were present. Tanhiao and party it is said, will leave by the next mail steamer via San Francisco. An address to the Queen and the English Parliament, was signed by those present, asking that their territory may rema nonly under Tawhiao's administration. Thames, This Day. Exceptionally heary rain fell yesterday for about 12 hours, and a portion of Shori land towship has been flooded. A shingle splitter, named George Hill, was washed down Tararua Creek by tremendous freshes, and his body has been found on the beach horribly mutilated. Chbistchubch, This Day. A farmer named Fisher was driving a harvester at Loburn, when the horses bolted, and threw him in front of the machine, part of which caught his left arm and stripped the flesh off in a frightful manner. The Acclimatisation Society have fixed the shooting season for native game for four months from Ist April, and for cock pheasants and ('alifornian quail for three months from the Ist May.
