Phonography
• We cannot too strongly ur^e the inducements which Phonograply holds out to all and we would therefore direct onr readers attention to the advertisement in another column of Mr Hawkins, solicitor Feilding, who is a member of " The Phonetic Society" and holder of a "Pitman certificate." The universality of Pitman's Phonetic shorthand is the best proof of its value. Phonograply is indoubtedly one of the most useful and profitabltrof arts. For mental cultivation and as an aid to memory it is unexcelled. Its simplicity is one of its virtues and a thorough knowledge of its principles brings its own reward. By a knowledge of it, hundreds of men and women find lucrative situations in ihe railway, po?tal> and telegraph departments, and newspaper, merchants, and lawyers' offices, &c, throughout the world. Business men men have come to fully recognise the importance of stenography as a means of facilitating the transaction of (heir business, and this is opening a n ide field for the employment of those who have a knowledge of the " winged art." A little while ago the Messrs Sargood, merchants of Melbourne, offered large rewards to their clerks who should acquire a certain proficiency in Phonography, and ttc notice that the New Zealnnd Government has made Shorthand one of the subjects of the Civil Service examination.
