Inconsistencies of Magistrates

TO THK EDITOfi OJ? THE STAB. Sib,— Some few years ago, I appeared before Mr Ward. R.M., on an information against a leading Feilding resident for burning down a tenement belonging to oue Bolk. The Magistrate then ruled that there was a colour of title, or at any rate a dispute as to title, and dismissed the charge. I was surprised, therefore, al reading a few days ago, that the same R.M. has just committed for trial three or four unfortunate Maoris for precisely similar an offence, and has required heavy bail. Is there one law for the white and another for the black ? — I am, &c, Wm. S. Staite. Feilding, 13th February, 1884.
