The following report was adopted at the Borough Council meeting on Thursday evening last : — Your Committee beg to report that they have made an inspection of the Makino stream with the view of ascertaining the best measures to adopt for preventing a repetition of the inconvenience arising from the recent overflow with the result that they now make ihe following recommendations to the Council : - (1) That tho course of the stream be improved by cutting through a narrow neck of land near the residence of M r Daw. (2) Tbat a channel be cut about 2.} chains in length, and the stream diverted through it, at a point near Grey street. (3) That the course of the stream iv Derby street be made less tortuous by cutting away the .bank in two places. (4) That the logs and brushwood which have accumulated in several places between the Railway Line and Duke street, so as to block the stream, be cleared away. (5) The Committee recommend that in cases where the d -visions above referred to interfere with private property the owners should be communicated with, and their consent obtiained for the work to be done. (6) With regard to the manner of carrying out the works above referred to, the Committee are of opinion that tbey should be done by day labor, and that an additional man be engaged to assist the roadman to complete the same. (7) Your Committee would take this opportunity of pointing out to the Council the serious damage to Hobson street by the flood, as the stream is fast encroaching on it at various points between the Railway Line and Manchester street and consider tbe Council should take some action with regard to the matter.
