Cairo, February 8. Latest intelligence from Souakim states that Baker Pasha mistrusts the troops unper his command at that place and it is expected some regimentsjwill be recal-ed to Egypt. Hong Kong, February 8. News has reached here from Tonquin that an engagement has boen fought between the French troops aud a large body of rebels in the prorinces of Sontay and Nambmh. The latter were completely defeated and dispersed with considerable slaughter, the French loss being, it is stated, comparatively small. (PEB UNITED PEESS ASKOdATION.) Cheistchuhch, This Day. The match Tasmania v Christchurch was resumed this morning. Christen urch's first innings closed for 307. In the Tas manians' second innings they have lost three wickots for 10 runs. Wanganui, This Day. An interesting case to sheep farmers and stock owners was heard before the R.M. this morning. J. R. Sommervill was charged with neglecting to register his brand under the Brands and Branding Act, 1880, the case being brought purely as a test case by the Sheep Inspector. Defendant, it appears from his evidence, has had the brand CS. in his faniily for the last thirty years. The point in dispute was whether defendant could register the brand C S, and whether the Government had power to make persons take another brand. Judgment deferred until Monday.
