The Awahuri Bridge Discussion
♦ With reference to the discussion which took place in the County Council yesterday on the subject of the plans for repairs to the Awahuri Bridge, the following is a resume" of the inform tion then elicited :— On August 20, 1883, the chairman was authorised by a resolution of the council to apply for a grant in aid, and Mr Brat was authorised to prepare plans and estimates. When Mr Abmsthong was appointed engineer for the Taonui and Fitzherbert Hidings, at the next meeting offthe council, the resolution referring to the Awahuri Bridge was allowed to stand. In due course Mr Bbat prepared the plans, and when the bridge was washed away, forwarded them to the Chairman, who was then in Wellington, and who made the uecessary application. The committee of the Taonui and Fitzherbert Ridings met about/ the same time, and Cr Skebman wired to the Chairman, after Mr Bbay's plans had been ordered to be forwarded to the Minister for Public Works, that Mr Armstrong was preparing plans and specifitions. The Chairman wired in reply that plans and specifications had been ready for three months, and were then in the Minister's hands, with application. At the same time he asked who had given Mr Abmstboko the instructions to prepare plans, and directed to stop him proceeding. The committee complained at yesterday's meeting that the Chairman had stultified the committee. On the other hand the Chairman alleged that they had stultified themselres by taking action which contravened, or attempted to supercede, a distinct and specific instruction by resolution of the whole Council, which the Chairman was bound to carry out.
