The mat ter of the..Go rernment grant of £879. under the /Boads- and Bridges Ceastruction Act, making with the Couafcr'a share in the expenditure for works £987 was then discussed, -and -the amount was divided by the rule, of proportion. A discussion followed on the -pelitfpa 61 the ManawstuEoad Board that Fitrherbert be declared a county road. The '] Chairman suboiiUed that it irould incur i an unoecessar^ expense, and %i tijtirt^wM, enry probability^f^tiitf County, bftng-;
shortly abolished, it was^not expedient to Itjisl ate with reference to this matter. Cr« Walker and Engels strongly supported the petition, arguing the injustice the ratepayers had suffered under the old County regime, and the impossibility of getting full j usliee while the road was divided into two parts under the jurisdiction of two separate bodies. A resolution on the subject was about to be moved, but the Chairman ruled that it was extraordinary business.*; and could not be dealt with until after.a ..-. .notice of motion had been given. "• The: petition and olber correspondence Fe,thi a Buonytborpe Kairangi road was then ..considered, and it was agreed to .'.. if^fer the raattei to the Manawatu Road ijkwjfljl/. . . Ihe remuneration fee for each election to be 21s. "] On tbe motion ofCr Mcßeth, seconded %y.-jCr Engels, tbe application of Mr Peath. for a slaughtering license was granted with, tbe usual conditions. The letter of complaint re the Gorge Ferry was then considered, and it was Agreed that tbe Chairman call MrFalloon's attention to tbe matter by letter, and that Mr Sinclair be instructed to that effect. Messrs Cotter, Marsh, and Whibley attended as a deputation from tbe settlers of Ashurst for the purpose of asking the Council to take some steps towards the erection of a bridge across the Manawatu at the Gor&e. Mr Cotter having stated the object of the deputation, the Chairman pointed «ut the impracticability of anything being done in tbe matter at present, the Government having distinctly given to understand that tbe' matter must come under tbe Koads and Bridges Construction Act. Hence nothing could be done till the 31st of June next, besides wbicb the terms of fbe lease of the Ferry precluded * bridge being vied for another two ■ jears. " i! The deputation being satisfied with the •^xplattaiion, thanked the Council and . withdrew: ■„ Mr Lintoti's request re tbe Jobnski family was declined, and it was resolved, <ITr^TitJt l jhe ( jc«i«p.J#iion.of-4th October, 1883, (-^fgr,; aUpuran^ja-L to Johnskt > family be ..., rescinded. That the petition of the ratepayers on the Foxtonrorad be. acceded to. - The motion was negatived, two only Toting in its favor. The report of the committee re the .Awahuri Bridge, together with that of Mr Armstrong, engineer, on the subject, was then considered. . A long and somewhat animated discus* «tott ensued, which showed that some misunderstanding had arisen between the Chairman and committee with reference j£o the action taken in the matter of the engineering for the temporary repairs to the "bridge during the absence of the Chairman in Wellington. The Chairman fully j ustified the action he had taken, and said that what he had done Tiad been with the best intentions, .and with the view of satisfying the wishes of the committee. * . It was eventually resolved that the report in % nestion be referred back to the Engineer. Crs Mcßeth and. Linton were authorised to sign cheques. As the Government had not granted jam? money for the Awahuri Bridge all the tenders were declined. Besolved, That 'the next meeting of the Council be held on the first Wednesday in March at 12, nobri. Accounts amounting to £1,703 were passed for payment. l The Council then adjourned.
