The Central Railway

•*-» It will be remembered that the Minister of Public Works made a promise to Mr Macabthub, when the latter gentleman handed him the resolutions passed at the public meeting held on the question of the Ceutral^R-ailway Route, to the effect that Mr Rpchfpbt would bo"aent to survey the line, startingfrom Feilding, immediately on the return of Mr Rocheobt from Nelson. It is now nearly a fortnight since that promise Was made, yet we have not heard that any prepare tions have been made for its fulfilment. There was no time specified certainly, and it may be extended indefinitely, as the surrey of our particular line is not of so much importance to the Ministry as that of the Mokau. We think that if the present fine weather is allowed to pass without something being done, the opportunity will be lost altogether. It is not aa if the promise of the Minister was a new thing, for such is not the case. It is the fulfilment of a pledge made nine months ago by the Hon. W. Johnston, then the Minister for Public Works, therefore abundance of time has been allowed to redeem the pledge. What was then asked as a favor is now demanded as a right. We hope that the Mayor and County Chairman will not hositate to remind Mr Mitchels*-n of this part of his duties. In this connection the Taranaki Budget says .— " We learn that arrangements are being made for the survey parties to start early next week to explore the country for a railway via Mokau. It is expected that four different parties will start on Wednesday next, each party being assigned a distinct part of the ground to be explored. If the weather continues favorable we shall no doubt soou hear pf good progress being made." Four different parties for the Mokau line, and we hhve only a promise for one. Comment is needless.
