♦ An ordinary meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chamber ion Thursday evening last.— Present— Th* Mayor ' and *Crs Loudon, Thompson* Richardson, Goodbehere, Fowles, Higgin* Rutherford, and Worsfold. The minutes of the previous aeatingwere read and confirmed. . , Mr Carthew, the newly-elected Conncillor, made and signed the osuaideclar. ation, and^took his seat at the Council table. V : ,• The Mayor congratulated Cr Carthew r and hoped he would we_ck with the Conn* oil with that harmony which at present prevailed. Cr[Carthew thanked the Mayor fqrhis complimentary remarks. 7 ir: _, { The Mayor read a telegram at follow* from Mr Luckie, Commissioner of tb* Insurance department; re tbe matter of the loan : — "Loan approval. When Am you want the first £2,000 P On year sending debentures to Bank of New Zealand here I will bank money. Meanwhile please send specimen form for impaction. A report from tbe Inspector of N unanees was read, stating that premise* in the Borough gehend.ijr.werr in * satisfactorily clean and healthy- state. A special-report from the Inspector of Nuisances was also read n the matter ef the drainageof the properties of Messrs Rutherford, J. C. Thompion. and Gtehard. The following coneipondenefNraa then read:— . * General Post Office, Welfiagtofvretho hours of clearing tbe receiving boz in Manchester street, stating tbat the .Department could not see its way to alter the boars as suggested in tbo letter front the Council; Mr Bray* accepting th* office of Deputy Dog Tai Collector for the Borough. ■ . . Resolved, on tbe motion of Cr Goodbohere, seconded by Cr Higfin, That i the offer of the Commissioner of Inmurancefor the loan l)e accepted. A short conversation ensned on tho loan matter, after which it was resolved, on the motion of Cr Thompson, seconded by Cr Richardson, That the Mayer bo authorised to complete tbe arrangements with the Government for receiving tho first instalment of the loan. The question of tbe drainage of th* properties of Messrs Rutherford, Thompson and Gichard, referred to in tho Inspector of Nuisances', report, was discussed. Kesolved, on the motion of Cr Tendon, seconded by Cr Goodbehere, That th* matter of nuisance in Manchester etreet, complained of by tbe Inspector of nuisances, be referred to tbe Engineer and Publio Works Committee, and. that they report on the same at tbe next meeting of the Council. • V Resolved, That the Mayor-and Cr Carthew be added to the lftaano* Committee. ■ .I'^viM.■. , * . : ■ Resolved, That the nam* of Ci^Siehardson be added to the. A long discussion ensued ai to th# metalling of the newly-formed ttreets, but the matter waa ultimately dropped. It was understood it would be resumed at the next meeting. . ... : .v, r) A.
