Strange Charge of Rape.

At the Salvationist meeting last evening Detective Walker arrested a Salvationist named Harry Goodwood en a charge of rape, on the sworn information of- a girl named Ellen Pane, who alleges that the offence was committed in the Domain last Friday ; night under the fol- ; lowing circumstances-: — That they had net that evening at the Temperance Hall. Miss Paine, who was not acquainted with the lonely character of the loute, consented to go that way. The offence is alleged to kave been committed in the Domain on the road home. Ths accused, who is well knowß in Auckland, is a «aiior, and is about 30 years of age. He is engaged as the driver of a donkey-engine on the •Queen-street wharf. Captain Graham, «f the Salvation Army, says he bad constantly attended the Army meettn«g, and was formerly a member, but for some months hits not been recognised, owing to his general misbehaviour.
