. ♦- ; . The annual meeting of the Council was held inthe pouncil Chamber yesterday at noon for. the installation, of tho new May or and ordinary business. Pie-n sent^-Crs Sherwill (Mayor elect), Good* behere, Rutherford, Thompson, Fowles; Richardson, and Higghj. In the absence of the Mayor Cr .Goodbehere was elected chairman. The minutes of the : last ordinary meeting were read and confirmed. The newly-elected Mayor signed the usuai declaration, and, after congratulation and an expression of confidence, &c, by the chairman, took his seat hi tht i ouncil chair. by: The Mayor briefly addressed b th> Council, and thanked them andany ratepayers present for the confidence tbey had placed in him, and the honor they had conferred upon him by electing him to the highest office in the Borough. He spoke in high terms of the late Mayor, and hoped be would be able to Succeed him -with as much satisfaction to all as Mr Leth bridge bad given. Cr Higgin endorsed all that the new Mayor had said with reference* to the late Mayor, : and : congratulated the new Mayor, and expressed the confidence the councillors and ratepayers felt in his ability to discharge ' the duties of his office. „ '. '7 Cr Thompson spoke to the same effects A letter was read from Messrs Norman and Fearon, asking permission to remove gravel from the pit on the Kimbolton road, and it was lesolred that tht Ceuncil regretted it could not see its way to give the permission requested.' *>'■ . Smith, formation Railway road, L9S> 17» 6d ; A Diamond, formation North street, L 100; A. Gardner, lowering culvert LIO 2s; p. and J. Bartholomew, timber, L 4 10s 8d ; maintenance man, wages, L92s; Lamplighter, L 2; W. Carthow, library books, L3Q l3s 8d; G. C. Cr Goodbehere called attention to tbe early hour at which the new letter box in Manchester street was cleared. He then moved and Cr Thompsou seconded the following resolution :— That' the Mayor be requested to write to the Postmaster, Wellington, di»wmg his a^Untion to, the early hour (4 p.na.). at . which the new letter . box is cleared, and that in consequence thereof : it is of very little'use for business purposes to the public of Feilding, and; further to< intimate ;, to bun tbat considering tbe Wanganui mail does not leave Feilding till 6:30 p.m., and the Wellington mail at 7.66, p.m., fi mucb latter hour for clearing the letter box might without officicial inconvenience be fixed. Carried. Cr. Richardson asked ibe Mayer what were the prospects of getting: the loan money, and bis Worship replied that be hoped to bave some definite information by the next meeting. • / •- A . The Conned then adjourned till 8 p.m. on January 3rd; 1884.
