The Canton Riot
♦ The Englishman Logan, who was sentenced at Canton to «even years' penal servitude for shooting one Chinese dead and wounding another, is an officer of the outdoor staff of the Chinese Customs. He resided -with Bomeof his colleagues in a district of Canton called Honan, whete also are various establishments for" firing*' and otherwise/ "preparing tea for the European market. Logan' and some of his companions returned to the residence Nearly one morning, when tome coolies were lounging on their footstep waiting for employment, :>nd roughly ordered the Go inese to get out of the way, and than began to belabour them with sticks and whips. The well known cry- of " Save lite," 44 Save life- arose amonorithe Chinese; other coolies, who were also waiting for workjjined in the fray, which soon turned against the original aggressors. Logan now appears to have -rushed into the house and brought out a loaded rifle. At the eight of this weapon the crowd dispersed ri m *H directions ; bu«r» the unfortunate 5 man seems by this time to have -lost all control of himself. fie fired and killed 7 a boy 12 years of age, the bullet passing through his body, and Wounding a man who was Btandiog' :( byi It w«s out of this the riot at Caotop^ which we have already described, arose^
