A Man Buried Alive
Considerable excitement was occasioned at Hay, IN.S.W.,by a shocking occurrence which took place on 13th November at a selection near the town. A labouring man, known as Jimmy Work, employed in renewing the slabs in a deep well, was suddenly overtaken by a sanddrift, which buried him up to his neck. Keitlisinjr his |>erilous position, while gradually sinking in the treacherous soil, he shouted out to his mate, Perersen, vrho was above, to run hastily and procure assistance — which could only be procured at a place a quarter of a mile distant; Petersen lost no time in getting: help, and when heran back to the well found Jimmy Work still alive but in much danger, apparently greatly exhausted. As he was gradually, but surely, sinking in the sand. "Work was heard to exclaim, " .My God I'll never get out oi this." Pet rseii having been let down the well, endeavoured to rescue his companion, "who repeat edily urged on his exertions when suddenly another influx of sand occurred, which completely buried "Work, and . compelled Petorsen to «eek his own safety by being drawu lip. Night coming on, . nothing further could be dpue for the doomed man.. Jltxt day renewed efforts were made to get him out, and. the police having been informed of the occurrence, visited th.c scene of the accident. All the efforts were, however, unsuccessful, and fresh operations were to be begun by some experienced diggers
