Death of 38 Women in a Synagogue
A shocking accident is reported irom Poddlla, one of -the Russian provinces. In the town of Cracow, during afryice- in : the synagogue on Saturday, some person cried out that the edifice was on fire. A panic immediately- * ensued? Men, women, and children arose, and attempted to gain, the doors. The Btrong trampled on the weak, and fat fhe period of a minute tihe '. situation was appalling. 88 women were either trampled to death or suffocated, and nearly 50 -were seriously injured. Five aged . men and at least a dozen children P were taken out dead. The number wounded^ while not exactly stated, is said to be large. Nearly 2000 persons -were in the synagogue when the alarm was sounded. , Many of the women in the gaßeries leaped down to the main floor and'%ei* w bruised and stunned that tfiey could' _ot" extricate ffcemselves frbin the panic-stricken throng. It was hot until late in the afternoon that the- wounded were _tl b_redfor. An official investigation of the disaster has been ordered.
