Bulls Items

BOM OUB OWN COBBESKWCDEKT.) Bulls, November 14. A terrific thunderstorm broke- directly over this township last Tuesday. The flashes of lightning and tbe reports seemed instantaneous, indicating of course that the electrics! disturbance waa very near. I hear that about a dozen telegraph poles on the Marton line- have been split, and on Dr Curl's run one sheep was struck dead, the lightning first striking the animal's head and. passing down the back to the earth. Tbe down pour of rain was ani ul, causing no little damage by over flowing ol water pipes, ice. On enquiring of Mr Nicholas, our local postmaster, he informs me that it was by far the most severe electrical storm he had ever witnessed. The flashes came into the office in quick succession with the report similar to that of a gun being fired, aud had not the lines been all put through both Mr Nicholas and Mr Nutt (who was filling up new wires) are convinced that the- whole of the instruments and connections would have been destroyed, and probably the office set on fire. Some little damage was done as it was that took some time to rectify. Onr swimraists are quite disheartened ac tht vagaries of the river, for no sooner does the water become clear and there seems a prospect of a dip than it rains heavily and the whole aspect of affairs is altered. Yesterday's storm has brought the river up to flood mark again, and chances of a swim are as remote as ever. Our Junior Cricket Club acquitted themselves manfully on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, beating the Parawanui Club by over 80 runs. A most pleasant day was spent. A large meeting of the subscribers of our Horticultural Society took place oa the footpath in High street, in front of Mr Maclean's office. Through some inadvertence the Town Hall was not opened, although the advertisement notified that the meeting was to be held there* Mr Maclean was voted to the chair, i.e., the "fence." After considerable discussion it was decided that the Spring Show should he postponed for a week from th* advertised date. This will Wring it on Tuesday, the 27th November. 5__§™_""_""""""""
