Manchester Rifles

— — • — The Manchester Rifles paraded on Tuesday evening last, in the Public Hall, for the quarterly inspection by the officer in command of the district, Major Stapp. A. 11 the officers and men were present ! with the exception of two. After a number of movements made under the orders of Major Stapp, the men were drilled by each officer separately. Major Stapp then presented the several prizes won at the shooting during the earlier part of the day, and in each case he made most appiopriate remarks to the winner. When Capt Lethbridge received his prize the men testified to their appreciation of this gentleman by loud applause. Some of the older volunteers expected a rap over the knuckles from the Major for this breach of discipline, but were agreeably surprised when instead of that he expressed his warm approval of the good feeling which evidently existed between Capt Lethbridge and the men. He spoke in most complimentary terms of this officer. He also urged on the company the desirableness of continued rifle practise, and suid that no one could expect to become a good shot without it, and their efficiency in the field would be measured by their accuracy in firing. The men were then dismissed. A large number of ladies were present, to witness the inspection.
