Sullivan accepted on the 29th September Jem Mace's challenge to meet him in *he fistic arena for $10,000 a side. The pugilists propose to use gloves, but, in case Sullivan should manifest a desire to fight him with bare knuckles, Mace will train down to 172 pounds. An attempt was made to assassinate the British Consul, General Booker, at New York on September 26 ch. The assailant is a man named James F. Seeney, and it was said he came from Canada for the purpose of killing Booker. As examination after his arrest showed he was afflicted with melancholia aud severe nervous depression. He was sent to an insane asylum. Western, the American pedeßtrain, purposes to tramp over tbe highways of .England and Wales, fifty miles every 12 hours, foi a hundred consecutive days. Since the death of Marwood, the hangman, hundreds of his likenesses have been sold by photographers, and twenty-one ropes and nine sets of straps obtained from bis wife and sent to London for sale. Marwood's successor declares he becomes hangman because he likes the notoriety attaching to the position-
