Considerable excitement i.s expected over the forthcoming Mayoral election in Wanganui. There are two candidates in the field, and as both have a large circle of admirers and supporters, the contest will be a keen one. The Bey. F. P. Eel low requests us to publish the sincere thanks of the Wesleyan congregation to the members of the Feilding Brass Band for their kind aud very efficient services on the day of the Wesleyan picnic. The Fnglish mail arrived by tbe noon train to-day contrary to expectation, as it was understood that it would not arrive until 6.30 this evening. For tiie convenience of the public ihe Post Office will be open this evening from 7 to 7.30 Through a printer's error au awkward mistake occurred in our lender on Saturday's issue, deferring to the question of presenting a requisition to a good man to bring him forward to on. est the ay oral election, the word ''nie.ni.->" was misprinted tor the word '* man." A settler informs us tliat he owns a ewe, whose two lambs having died, sought consolation in adapting three motherless little pigs. Such a good foster-mother did the ewe prove herself to be. that she reared the little porkies very successfully. According to what Captain Mar-leod, of the New Hebrides Company, tells "The Vagabond," the bush tribes are still cannibals, and all eat human fl-'sh on tho quiet. Such flesh is always marketable among them, and a white man's carcase fetches a high price. We direct the attention of those interested to an announcement in another column, by which it will be seen that Messrs Halcombe and Sherwill will submit to auction, at their rooms, on Friday next, at 3 p.m., the privileges in connection with the Feilding Annual Sports. The Napier Telegraph says:— By Ihe arrival of the ship Waikato on the 7th inst. there are now five larce vessels in our roadstead on the berth for London ! with wool, and tbe Helen Denny may be shortly expected. In no previous wool season do we remember having so many ships loading here at one \time. On Sunday three of the crew of the ship Pleiades, including first and third mate, and one sailor were drowned at Napier by a heavy sea capsizing the boat in which they were returning across the bar from shore to the ship. There were six on board the boat when it went over, including Captain Setten, who had a very narrow escape, having just become unj conscious as he was rescued. I A kiss is sometimes a very expesiven article, as a young man found to his cost jin one of the London Police Courts, I when he was fined " 20s or ten days' hard [ labour" for assaulting a young woman by kissing. Not having 20s to spare he decided on going to prison, and he really | deserved some punishment for tbe unI gallant nature of his defence. "I was j under the influence of liquor," he said, ! " or I should not have dreamed of doing it." The remains of the late Mrs Newman j were interred yesterday afternoon The I funeral was attended by a large number, j not only of personal friends of the de | ceased, but of townspeople generally, including most of the principal tradesmen. There were five or six laden vehicles, and about twenty persons on horseback, besides a good number of pedestrians. , The serv.ee at the grave was conducted ia a feeling and impressive manner by Mr Roots. We call particular attention to the great sale of boots opened to-day by Mr Jones on the premises formerly occupied by Mr Hayhittle, corner of Manchester square, and known as the old Ready Money Store. The stock is very large and varied, and comprises all the requirements as well as the latest novelties in boots aud shoes, for old and young, male and female, gentle and simple. Mr Jones is well known throughout the coast as the " King of Leather," and people who want to be furnished with good sound understandings, at most astonishingly low charges should pay a visit to his establishment and see the bargains he has to offer, The Post says : — Tobacco smokers cannot be too careful in attending to the cleanliness of their pipes, as a resident of a country district a few miles from Wellington has discovered to his cost. A few months ago he borrowed a pipe, which proved to be a very dirty one, from one of his fellow-workmen, and in the course pf two or three weeks his under lip commenced to feel rather painful, but, as it had been cracked by the sun prior to the smoking ofthe pipe, he thought little of the matter, and applied ; some simple remedy. The lip, however, continued fo become more painful, and on a medical man being consulted, the sufferer was horrified to learn that he had contracted cancer. This disease is making serious » inroads on his life, despite all that mcdi- j . cal skill can do, and it-is doubtful ' ■■ whether its progress can be arrested. <
