The Order of Odd Fellows.
+~ Take the Oddfellows, says the Lloyd's Weekly News. They are snore than half-a-inillion of orderly, tirovident, intelligent men. 'Ihey sent 425 delegates to the Nottingham meeting on Whit Monday to discus* thoir interests. They hive upwards Af five millions of accumulated capital. Their revenue last year wa* £762,694. and they paid within the year more than half a million in sick and funeral benefits. Last, year the oraer increased by 43,917. Having transacted their business, the Oddfellows banquetted under the presidency of Lord Carnarvon, who said that the members of friendly societies •' mbraced the finest and flower of working men ot England." He remarked (hat the Oddfellow* represented principles of aelf-help, manly* independanc s common organisation, self-denial, thrift, friendly intercourse, and the union ot classes. These are virtues in the oitizen which the State should leave to grow untouched. Out of such lodges, unities, conferences, and congresses, habits of self-restraint are springing apace—and affecting the advance in temperance of which the teetotal societies claim the authorship.
