New Buildings.

(COKTIinjED). Of the Churches in these districts, the ome at Turakina bas been but lately finished. The Messrs Broadbelt. of Bulls, were the contractors, so it is n#edleßs to say the building is well put together. At Tutu-Tofara, near Marlon, a little Church very similar to that of Halcombe is being buili, Mr J«mes "McChesney, of Marton, and formerly of Feilding, being the contractor. The designs for these Churches are, of course, from the offices of tbe Diocesan Architects. Tbe Railway \\.>.v) at Turakina is being re-crccted from the designs of the Messrs Young Bros , of Wanganni, the contract being let to a Marton firm of builders. There is no doubt, however, tbat the event of the year in the building of this district will be the erection of tbe house jußt about to be built for Mr Arkwright, of Overton, near Marton. Not. only is tbe bouse unusual on account of its size, but the style of its eont ruction is * decided innovation ia New Zealand. It is to be a genuine half timbered house ; that is, it is to be a framed building of heavy heart of totara, the panels formed by the framing heinir filled in by concrete. The rage there is in England just now for houses of this class may be looked upon as a guarantee of its suitability to j modern requirements, and there is little j doubt if it be suitable in Englcnd it would be even more so out here, where a atone building could scarcely be erected on account of the earthquake*. Of course precautions have io be taken to prevent tbe concrete panels being shaken out of their positions and due arrangements hare been made by tbe architects to obriate this danger. The rooms generally are large, the principal ones being drawing room and dining room, each 26 x 16, study aad library eacb 18 x 16, hall 20 x 16. and about 25ft high, lobby 12x7, kitchen 18 x 16, servants hall 16 x 14 6ft, aehool room 18 1 16. There are 10 bed rooms, housemaid*' closet, bath room, and other conveniences. Electric bells are to be used, aud hot and cold water will be laid on all over the bouse. With regard to the interior finishing, as is aeces•aray to be ia keeping with its style, every thing will he mass ye and strong, moat of tbe rooms being parcelled throughout. As the site of this building is very pretty, being on one of the t rrace overlooking the Porewa Stream, a little above its junction with the Kangitikei, ir predict that the -place generally will be as pretty as any in New Z< aland, and will surpass many ©▼en in the Old Coantry. Messrß Atkins and Clere are the architects for tbe building, aad Messrs Alexander and McFarlane, of Wanganui, the contractors. Mr A'ex. Bell, of Haleomhe, is supplying the timber. The contract price is £2567.
