Deceased was accused of witchcraft and causing by that means the death of Wi Xaiouke, a young chief who died a dayor two before. New Plymouth, This Day. A man named Edward Smith, said to be to be a brother to Mrs John Williamson, whose husband was formerly Superintendant of Auckland, was brought in by train from Hawera to the hospital He was taken there in a cab, and whilst the usual formal questions were being asked bim preparatory to being put into a ward, his head fell forward, and he expired. When arriving at the hospital he showed no signs that his death would be so -udden. The Supreme Court opened to-doy. Following is the case list:— Thos. Weir, arson and false pretences; Murty Collins, maliciously shooting cattle; Watteha and Waittea, shooting cattle with intent to steal carcse; John Paul, house breaking and burglary: Putua, receiving stolen goods; Alexander Boswel l, false pretences. Civil oases — Tiustees of Halse estates v Kenney ; Christie v Peacock. Dunediit, Ibis Day. Arrived — Parieora, from London, after a run of 72 days, tbe fastest passage on record. Welli-qton. This Day. At a meeting of the Philosophical Society last niuht, Dr Buller in his remarks on rare species of birds in the colony, said the Wattle Bird of Australia liad been found here, Referring to the Kea, he said they were increasing rapidly in destructivcness, apparently growingfonder of fat of sheep. The Keas killed 15 to 20 thousand sheep annually.
