' He said he hoped the fair-play characteristic of !• nglishmen would be observed th. oughout this Intercolonial contest. There were many things isi connection with such contests which he did not aeree with forinstanct, ' he knew there would be as much betting iv that liill as on a racecourse, and, while he strongly objected to betting, he quite recognised that it was impossible to prevent it. He did hope that at the ( conclusion of the contest those who lost would pay up like honourable men. He ] wound up by remin ing his hearers that ( they will all engaged in one very important race, in which God and the angels were their spectators, In that race not only one but all might win, and the rewarJ of which was eternal, not temporary. The first mile was done in lOmin- 15sec. Scott being two laps behind. There are twentytwo laps to the mile. There was an . attendance of 400 or 500 people. ' Later. At 4 o'clock this morning I'd wards had walked 31 miles 13 laps', and Scot 31 i miles. -.■■■■ ■■
