« [PEE UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.] London, October 1. At the Pittsburg regatta, Pennsylvania, William Elliot wilfully fouled Hosmer in the sculling match, and was thereupon debaired from competing. Hosmer easily defeated Eyck. By an explosion of gunpowder at Seiges, in California, 40 Chinaman were tilled. The Chinese Viceroy has complained to the European authorites at Canton regarding the result of the trial of a European named Logan for the murder of a Coolie. Owing to the excited feeling of the populace, business is entirely suspended. There appears to be now some prospect ol France modifying its scheme for the establishment of convict settlements in the Pacific. At a Tory meeting at Birmingham, at which there was an immense attendance, resolutions condemning the Government were passed. Professor Dicey, in a letter to the Times, contends that the action of Mr Service in preventing tbe Irish informers trom landing in Australia was in defiance of the law.
