An American Cyclone.
A TRAIN DESTROYED. GREAT DESTRUCTION OF PKOPEKTY. SHOCKING LOSS OF LIFE. The following telegrams appear in the San Francisco papers : — Minneapolis (Minnesota), 22nd August. — A heavy storm haa been raging west and north. Reports come from Kaason, on the Winona. and St. Paul road, that a cyclone passed that place, blowing dowo muny buildings, killing t*o persons, and injuring several others. Hailstone* fell measuring ten inches in circumference. At Steven's Point and in Wood County, crops, fences, buildings, and mill dams were tora to pieces. The towns of Stockton and Newhope were visited by a terrible hailstorm ; corn, oats, and hops were badly damaged. Live stock were killed at several points by flying rails. Owatonna (Minnesota), 22nd August. — Meagre telegraphic advices were received here early this morning that a terrible accident occurred between Rochester and Zunibrota, Minnesota, on the Rochester and NortHr-rn Division ot the Chicago and North- Western Railroad, by which about one hundred people- were killed aad wounded. The train wrecked was that which leave* Rochester about 4.45, arriving at Zumbrota about 6 p.m. It was caught in a severe wind and hailstorm that prevailed in that vicinity betweea 4 and 6 o'clock in the evening, and while ruaning at high speed was lifted from tiie rail*. A gentleman who ha» been at the scene of the disaster, described it as one of the most horrifying railroad accidents ever seen. Every car in the train was completely wrecked tnd almost literally ihattered to piecei by the sudden stop caused by the tram leaving the rails. The unfortunate passenger* were buried beneath, the dSbris. Many were dilled and nearly every person aboard the train was injured. The gentleman stated that nine dead bodies had been taken from the ruii^s, and a large number of those who were seriously injured had been removed to Rochester. At the time lie left, the work of extricating tiie unfortunate victims was still progressing. St. Paul (Minnesota), 22nd August.— \ cyclone struck Rochester at 3 p.m. yeßterday, demolishing about 30 houses and damaging 200 more. Fourteen identified and four unknown bodies kave been brought to the uudertakers', and six others , have been taken care of by friends. In Dodge and Olnistead counties terrible | damage was done. It is impossible to give an estimate of the damage to the city and county. It is a beautiful little city of 8000 or 0000 mhabitaats. Host of the Houses are brick, and there are many stately business blocks. Indefinite despatches reached here early this morning of the terrible effect of the cyclone. At 10 o'clock the Governor received the following : — Rochester is im rums. Twenty-four people hare been killed and over forty j seriously injured. One-third of the city has been laid in waste.
