Feilding Borough Council.
An ordinary meeting of the Council was held in the Council Chamber last evening. Present — The Mayor, and Oov.Hcillors Richardson, Goodbehere, Worsfold, London, Thompson, Rutherford, Fovrlos, Sherwill, and Higgin. The minutes of the previous ordinary j meeting were rend and confirmed. I A letter was read from the chairman of the Oroua County Council, stating tiu\t that body was prepared to protest against the charge made by the Wanganui hospital committee, and asking if the Borough Council would do the same. An arrangement was originally made, by the Manawatu County Council with the Wnnganui Borough Council to pay £25 . annually to the hospital. Since then the two bodies, the Feilding Borough and the Oroua C. C. have come into existence, and these had each been charged the same amount as paid by the Manawatu County. After considerable discussion it was resolved that the Mayor take the steps towards securing a proportionate reduction in the subsidy to the hospital funds. A deposit of £20 accompanying a tender for £2(30 of debentures was received a*d the tender accepted. . The petition of the Port street burgesses as presented at the last meeting of the Council was next discussed. - Cr Thompson strongly urged $he favorable consideration of the petition. Cr Eutherford mentioned other work* which he held to be of greater importance ' than Port street, Cr Richardson very earnestly pleaded the importance and necessity of the road being formed. • Cr Higgin justified the action of the Public works Committee in making-their report, but did not opposa the work now proposed. Cr Thompson moved and Cr Richardson' seconded that plans and specifications be at once prepared for the formation and metalling of Port street. The Mayor said the day the Public Works Committee visited the locality, they thought Churcher. street the more important of the two streets, Port street having the better road, and Chureher street being an easy way of access toNorth street. i he resolution was then put, five Voting for it and nve against. The Mayor gave his casting vote against it, and it was therefore lost. It was resolved that fresh tenders be cnlled for the formation <fee, of Campbell, Kast, and Derby streets. Cr Worsfold proposed and Cr Powles seconded that tenders be called for the formation of Warwick street and Fergusson street, leading from Kimboltom road to Manchester street. Cr Higgin spoke in faTor of the motion. Cr Thompson opposed it, and moved, as an amendment, that the formation of Fergusson street be not inclnded in the formation of Warwick street. This was seconded by Cr Richardson. The amendment was pat and negatived. The motion was then put and carried. Cr Thompson moved, that the resolution passed on the list of papers and journals for the reading room, be rescinded, and that the list be reconsidered. This was seconded by Cr Sherwill. Cr Thompson gave as his special reason for proposing the alteration, that some of the periodicals were unsuited to the general public. The resolution was put and carried by a majority. Cr London asked if it was competent for th» Council to rescind part oi a report on resolution only. The Mayor explained that it was. Cr Sherwill moved, and Cr Higgin seconded, that the following be the list of periodicals for the reading room, and that Mr Carthew, bookseller, of Manchester street be instructed to procure them immediately : — English Punch, Illustrated London News, Australasian, Saturday Renew, Graphic, Nineteenth Century, Blackwood's Magazine, Sunday at Home, Land and Water, Irish Times, Scientific American. The motion was carried unanimously. Cr Worsfold asked if any person wa« responsible for looking after the matter of chimneys taking fire. It was intimated that the bye-law on tht subject would be put into force. Cr Fowles enquired respecting the lamp stolen from the square. No further information had, however been received. It was resolved that the name of Cr Thompson be added to the Finance Committee. The Mayor called attention to the Manchester street ditch nuisance, which, he said, the local Press had frequently referred to, and thought that something should be done in the matter. After some conversation as to the matter of nuisances generally, it was resolved that the Inspector of Nuisances furnish a regular monthly report to the Council. The \'\ ay or said that the Council would have to consider the matter of a greater remuneration to the Town Clerk, whose duties were continually increasing. m Cr Sherwill agreed with the Mayor, and gave notice of motion that the salary of the Town Clerk be raised to £150 per annum. The Council then adjourned until Thursday, October 4th.
