The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, SEPT. 8, 1883. Cheese and Butter Factories.
The fact that Mr ISowkon, the Government Lecturer on Cheese and Butter .Factories, will visit Feilding in a few days will be a direct encouragement to ihose gentlemen who have taken the initial steps towards the Wmntion o? a Company in Folding. Wherever Mr Jiowron has lectured it is observaide that shortly after his visit a factory has been started. It is to be hoped that Feilding will prove no exception. In this connection it is singular that so little renl interest has been displayed amongst us. Not the slightest gram of enthusiasm has been seen among the farmers or cattle raisers. In fact, those who are the most interested are the rao^t indifferent. It is pei-fV-Hy ridiculous for men to exclaim again -t the hard ness of the times, the bad prices that, they have been offered for cattle, and .so on, if they will do nothing ior themselves. Luckily the beef market is now on the risf, and this cause of complaint is removed, and we believp permanently. People must do somothino" more than merely sit down and I n •* mourn over their lot. Activity, energy, arid combination of tureen, ar* requited I to make a place progressive, r.nd the only men who have displayed these qualities in the Manchester Block are the siiwrnillers. That Feilding is the most solvent and 'really prosperous settlement on the West Const is entirely owing to ihe timber trade, and no other. Another thing, while these men h ye been working, keeping an army of laborers employed in advancing their own interests and keeping trade alive, they have been cl. -aring the forests off the land and making ir fit for cattle to run on to prepare for the Wellington markets, thus giving a double benefit. It cannot be denied that as time goes on the revenue from this source (the timber) must diminish year by year as the forests become exhausted, and some other indu-try must take its place. As to what this should be there caa be no two opinions. Agriculture in all its branches, cattle raising generally, and factories of various kinds, will be the weakh producers in the future, as timber is in the present. If our farmers ar •to tako the place of the sawinillers. now is the time for them to beirih. It is no use putting off until a future time the work that should be begun to-day. In our opinion, and that of all really sensible men, the cstnlilishiuG-nt of h Cheese and Butter Factory is' one of the first steps to be taken in tha direeton, for by such means will all young: and struggling farmers be able to find a cash murkit for their, milk, which will enable them to have -ready money in hand, day by day. to purbhas<> thei necessaries of life- at the lowe&c
rat os, and be able stoadiiy to increase ihi.'ir operations and the n umber ot their milch cuws. There, is everything 1 !o gain ami nothing to lose. A few years hard work would enable any farmer to becom* independent. It j iv-nVets o-reat credit on the people of VV*aiii>anui, K-.irere, Woouville, Hawcra and other places in .the Colony | to see the amount of energy they sire briiigrii"- to bftiir on the formation >t factories. It shows that they really have an honest desire In their hearts . t<> do/-veil themselves, and to propagate j tlie principles of well doing- among" o;In-rs by a S'oori example. Let us hope that we will follow it, and that the result nf rhe next few days' events . will bp the Hicot'h^fui starting of the { Feil.lin^ Cheese and Butter factory j Company. I
