Volunteer Ball.

The ball, celebrating the anniversary of the Manchester Rifles, was held in the Town Hall last night. About 60 couples were present. The catering was under the able superintendance of Messrs Summers and Mayhew, and gave every satisfaction. The band, under the skilled leadership of Mr King, was everything

that could be desired, and elicited wellearned encomiums from the dancer*. Several extra dances were \ layed by the ladies, and the brilliant execution of two of them was muck admired. Lieut. Hector Booth was almost efficient Master of Ceremonies, and was ably assisted in the performance of his arduous duties by Sergt. Bilderbeck. The secretary, Sergt. Nicholas, deserves every praise for the manner in which he made ail the final

arrangements, and saw them carried out

company began to arrive about 8.30 "p.m., and at nine the room was well filled. Among the guests we noticed several officers belonging to other corps. A number of ladieg and gentlemen from Palmerston were also present, and the civilians of the Borough were well repre■ented. The Manchester Rifles turned out almost to a man, and their sombre uniform had rather a pleasing effect when contrasted with the brilliant dresses of the ladies. Dancing began shortly after nine o'clock, and was continued with unabated spirit until about four in the morning, when several of the parties began to take their departure. The more enthusiastic deciples of Terpsichore kept up the spirit of the ball until the " pale light of dawning day" warned them to retire. We must say that this ball has been by far the best and most successf ul party of the season. The officers and men of the corps deserve no small 'eed of commendation for their efforts to please in this direction. We would like to write a great deal about the beauty of the ladies and the splendour of their various dresses, but our space is limited. We earn only remark that they all looked remarkably well, and their dresses were " perfectly lovely."
