THE TIDAL WAVE. 3.000 LIVES LOST. EBUTEB'S TELEGBAMS. Received Septt. 1, 2.90 p.m.] Londok, August 31. Reports to hand from Java give the estimate of 30,000 (quory 3,000) as the number of lives lost by the tidal ware recently experienced on the coast of that island. Sydxey. This Day. The following horses now remain in for the Great Metropolitan Stake, to be run on Tuesday next, viz., Aide de Camp, Ascot, Boscawen, Cunnamulln, First Demon, Gloucester, Bocholas, Sardonyx, JNorman, Phyl'is, Segenhoe, Willoroo, Yately, The Drummer, The Gem. The weather is now fine. Melboubne, This Day. Telegrams are to hand from Geraldon, on the West Australian Coast, stating that a tidal wave was experienced there on Monday last. The sea receded fully n hundred yards, and enabled people to pick up a quantity of stranded fish. Adelaide, Tins Day. A slight shock of earthquake has been experienced in this colony.
[pee united press association.] Hawera, This Day. A deputation of the West Coast Meat Export Company met an influential body of grasiers here yesterdaj'. It was resolved, that in the opinion of the meeting it was desireable that support be given to the Company by the farmers on the West Coast. Over £300 in notes was destroyed in the Maori whare burned for utu a few days ago.
