Trade Prospects.
The Wellington Times' London correspondent writes — There is a lot ot business doing in tha city ( London), but the profits are so small thut in many cases it scarce, if at all, equals the interest of the money invested, and consequently several firms havsuspended payment. Everything depends on agond harvest. At present, crops of all kinds are in prime condition. N"thing ot any consequence is jet a failure, but a wet August and September would change 'he whole *tory. As yet, with much exception, the weather has been splendid ; everyone is calling the present un old fashioned summer, whatever that may mean. The import and extort returns are favorable lor the first six months of the year, though without elasticity, but, whilst imports huve largely increased, exj^rts tend to decline, though still much above 1881. The total number of failures for the hair year have l>een oG9B, which compares well with the similar period of every year up to 18/8 The number o' farmer* who had to compound is only 242, largely under the figures of last year. What is wanted, and a good agricultural season may do it, is a general rise iD prices all round, specially in textile fabrics.
