The Public School* vote was passed as printed, also the Native Schools £15,100, Industrial Schools £11,270, and Deaf and Dumb Institutions £2315. On Tote £11,800 for -Higher Education, Mr Hursthouse moved to strike it out, as these school! were maintained at the expanse of the poor, for the benefit of the rich. The amendment was lost by 32 to 22, and the rote passed. Clause 9 — Native affairs. The following voles passed : — Natire Department £6,085, Fraud Prevention £546, and Miscellaneous £3701 Clause 12— Defence. Militia and Volunters £22,235 passed, Armed Constabulary £172,307. Mr Hutchison thought they could do with half the police and Constabulary. He moved a reduction of £2^ooo. Mr Bryce said constant applioetions were being made for increase of police protection. The rote passed. Stoves and Magaziues £3,785. Miscellaieous, £7,148 passed. Clasrll— Workirg Railways, £634,000 was passed. Architect's Office, £1,660. Government Dohons, £1,221. Public Buildings, £3063 C; Miscellaneous, £4925 was passed. Progress was then reported and the House roe at 225 a.m.
