Nelson hops are quoted (vide N.Z.L. & M. Company's report for 9th August) at 6s 3d to 7s. A powerful anti-tobacco league in forming in Feilding. ''any ,of the leaguers are very enthusiastic — and uielancholly. The Tier. Mr Leech has resigned his curacy at Palmerston, owing to bad health. He has accepted an appointment in Sydney. A Chinaman, named Ah Ouse, •wishing to join his cousin Ah Chin who had gone to the Flowery Land, took his quietus recently by jumping into a river. His body has not yet been recovered. \ It is probable Mr Slieehan, M.H.E., will visit England at the close of the present session. It is believed that he has been retained by certain natives to prosecute some extensive land claims against the (Government. An indignation meeting was held at Palmernton last evening, for the purpose of passing resolutions condemning the Hon W. Johnston for his neglect of the interest! of Manawatu. A report of the meeting appears elsewhere. The demand for cattle appears slightly oq the increase. On Tuesday night Mr Champion took a largo mob through Awahun, en route for Wellington. Last night there were 300 head of young steers for Napier in the paddocks attached to the Endymion Hotel. After the House had gone into supply the other evening, a discussion arose concerning the native land purchases by the Government, during which MrJ. Macdonald (a southern, member) accused the present Government of throwing the Patetere Block into the bands of speculators. The repairs'to the embankments of the Kiwitra stream, near Norman's farm, will be completed to-morrow. Mr Aitlien is the contractor, and the work has been done inSallmost creditable manner, end will prevent the necessity of any similar work for many months. The committee of the Oroua County Couucil appointed for the adjustment of accounts, and who were authorised to arrange for the date of the next meeting of the council, have fixed on Monday next, when the council will us et in the Manchester Road Board's office at 10 a.m. A slight mishap occurred to the engine of the train from Foxton yesterday afternoon. The bearings of one of the wheels ' became so "fired" as to prevent its working. The train was brought to a stand a | little below Bainness«, and after a little ; attention which occupied about 10 mm- ; uteu the journey was resumed. The Wellington people will be jubilant 1 over the outcome of the trial crushing at the 'olden Crown battery, Terawljiti. ] | One-and-a-half ounces to the ton is a very j fair return if the stone is plentiful and i easily got at. Before we give any decided 1 opinion we would like to know the assay of the metal after it has been melted. Until then we really know nothing about the value of the crushing. ( We draw the attention of capitilisti and * others to the advertisement of the Bor- J ough Council calling for tenders for the purchase of £2000 worth of debentures to be issued as a firat instalment of the authorised loan, of £6000. As the security is the best in the whole co ony 3 and the rate of interest, 7 per cent., is J high, we have no doubt but that consider* * ably more than this amount will be c tendered for. ' Ar a sign of the times, we gather from the Hole i tiki Guardian that the banks thoughout Weatlnnd and the Nelson Sonth West Gold Field* have reduced the price of gold from £3 16i fid to £3 16s per ounce. Thus gold appears to' p differ from any other commodity in this b respect that when any ordinary commer- ■*' cial article is scarce it increases in value- "! Gold is notoriously scarce all over the c ] world, and therefore the price is falling.' h We cannot explain this anomaly. . ' K
The Borough Council will meet this i>Teninjj at eight o'clock, when the matter >tf «ome tenders and other important business will receive attention. Our request made to the chairman of the Manawatu County Council some few weeks ago to the effect that a polling place should be appointed st Atvahuri has been acceded to, and Mr P. Stewart's house at Awahuri has been appointed a polling place for the Oroua election. Last night the House wasted the usual amount of time wrangling over the grant for Public Libraries. We would remind ourVorth City Fathers that the burgesses will look to them to see that the Feilding Public Library does not miss its share of the grant this year. There was a captain's parade of the Manchester Eifles last night. The attendnnee was small. After a short drill a meeting of the corps was held to consider the desirableness ot making any change in the uniform. It was decided that the uuiform as at present worn be allowed to remain with out alteration. An entertainment in aid of the prize fund of the Makino Road School will be given on Tuesday, the 2 1st instant. The auditory will be regaled with music and singing by well-known local amateurs; readings from popular anthors will also be given. We predict a pleasant evening's amusement. A requisition is being signed by the electors of Kawa Kawa Biding, asking Mr James Bull to stand for the seat in the V anawatu County Council made-va-cant by thr retirement of Mr A. Bailey. We are glad to see that our suggestion has been adopted and a requisition for* warded by Mr Owen Pleasants on the part of the residents and settlers of the Ashurst- Taonui district to the Education Board, Wanganui, for a school to be erected and a master appointed. There a:*e 44 children of a proper age to attend school. Mr J. C. Thompson has most liberally offered to present a piece of land for a site for the building. We are glad that the meeting yesterday for the adjustment of accounts between the Oroua'and Manawatu Counties parsed off without the slightest disagreement or hitch of eny kind, the whole business being not only conducted in the most friendly spirit, but resulting in a moat amicable arrangment, and one which can scarcely fail to give satisfaction to all concerned. It has already been ratified by the Manawatu Council, and there can be no doubt o* a similar result following the presentation of the report to the Oroua Council on Monday next.
