PARLIAM NT ARY.

CHANGE OF CORRUPTION. (PEB UNITKP PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Wellington, August 3. Major Atkinson gave notice to the effect that a select Committee, comprising Messrs Driver, Hurst, Macandrew, Mont- ' gomery, Steward, J. E. Brown, and J. G. Wdson be appointed to enquire into and report upon t»>e charges made against the Premier and Colonial Treasurer by Mr Dargaville. Wellington This day. Mr Shepherd thought no good would fresult from pushing the matter further. Hurst thought that the appointment of a committee necessary, but as he had been accused wrongfully of personal animosity to Mr Dargaville, he must decline to sit on it. Seddon, in a long speech said it would be impossible now to prove what took place in 1869. He objected to Government by committees, and thought Dargaville had already by his amendment discovered intention of imputing personal dishonor to the Treasurer or Premier. Atkinson said he was willing to accept the retraction and apology. Petrie supported motion for committee unless the charges were unconditionally retracted. Mr Dodson would like to see the matter settled by previous question at 12.46. Division took place as to whether Holmes amendment or Montgomery's should be added to the preamble previously agreed to. The former was carried by 43 to 23. Atkinson asked leave to withdraw the preamble, but Grey objecting it could not be done. On motion as amended being put, Smith moved the previous question, which was negatived on the voices. Fish strongly • urged Dargaville to say that he had not intended to impute personal dishonor to the Treasorer. In a similar case in 1878 Grey had given such an assurance and Atkinson then accepted it, ns he would no doubt do now if given the opportunity. He appealed to Dargaville most earnestly to give this assurance, but Dargaville did not rise, and the motion as amended was carried on the voices, and the House rose at 1.20.
