REPORT OF THE BANGER AND DOG, TAX COMMITTEE.
The Committee appointed to consider the advisableness of appointing a Ranger for the Borough, and also the best means of collecting the dog tax now due, or which will become due daring the current year, beg to report as follows : — (1.) That after haying carefully considered both subjects, they are of opinion that it is essential to appoint a Banger* and also a Deputy Dog* tax Collector; and further, that the objects sought for could best be obtained by amalgamating the two offices. (2.) That for tie six months during which the former hanger held his appointment, poundage fees passed to the credit of the Council funds to the total amount of £22 18s 2d. As the Banger's remuneration consisted of one half of this sum, together with salary amonnting to £5 4s, making a total of £16 13s, it will be seen that the office was not only selfsupporting, but left a small surplus. Four Committee are, however, of opinion that the system of payment in proportion bo the number of animals impounded is calculated to cause undue harshness on the part of the Banger, and so press unfairly on ratepayers. They therefore recommend that the Banger should be paid a salary of £20 per annum, his appointment to terminate on a week's aotioe from either side. (3.) That with regard to the urea qvsr which the Banker should exercise his fanotions; your Committee advise that the boundaries of the borough be his limit. (4.) That in the appointment of a Deputy Registrar of Dogs, your Committee would suggest he be paid 2s on each log registered by him, and that his appointment should terminate with the cusrenfc yoar, or on a week's notice, should he fail to carry put the duties of Ills office satisfactorily, Fbakk' Lethsbridge. Chairman of Committee. Feilding, July dUt, 1883.
