Wanted, A Wife.

, What peculiar ideas of humour some of our colonial friends must have (says the city Press). The Agent»General of one of our Australian Colonies received lately a communication from a settler up country, stating that he was a highly prosperous man, well known in his own * neighbourhood, surrounded by every I comfort a man could reasonably desire — but one. He was a single man. Would the agent do him the great kindness to select for "Him in England a suitable partner? He was himself 35 years of age, sound in wind and limb, fairly well educated, and fairly good looking. He wanted health rather than beauty, good temper rather than accomplishments, and cheerfulness rather than money. Upon receiving intelligence from the agent that he had discovered such a treasure he would at once forward a good round -sum for all necessary expenses of passage and outfit, together with ali proper credentials as to respectability and truth-. fulness. He then went on to say that within few miles of his farm was a friend fe of his, in the same unfortunate condition . aa himself, but he, not being quite so prosperous, would like his treasure to bring just sufficient money with her to, as it were, pay for her own board and lodging; but in any case^he should himself expect to have first choice. From enquiries he has made, the agent has every reason to believe that the application is bona fide, and he is in a state of doubt what to do — the amusement it might probably afford him on the ono hand, in case of success, being more than counterbalanced by the possible responsibility on the other, in case of failure.
