It is almost needless to say that there is a " shine " over it. It has been decided to appoint a woman physician to the post of superintendent of the female employes in the Post office London. The compulsory clauses of the Education Act will be brought into force at the conclusion of the Midwinter holidays. The parents of children will do well to keep this in mind. The railwny returns for the Wanganui section show a falling off during the fourweekly period ending May 26th, of £382, as compared with the corresponding period last year. Messrs Atkins and ' lerehave prepared the plans for the Kauangaroa Bridge, in accordance with the provisions of the Roads and Bridges Construction Act, and they were transmitted to the" Government on Friday last by the Rangitikei County Council. A man named John William Gordon has been arrested at Patea on a charge of issuing a valueless cheque of £2. As usual, this man is well connected at Home, and ha 9 been for years in the receipt of remittances, which were squandered in drink. \ State Councillor von Wangenheim, of Germany, haa been shot dead by a man who unsuccessfully applied to him for a Government billet, the murderei subsequently committed suicide. If that kind of thing was earned on this country, the male inhabitants would soon be decimated. A contemporary publishes the following cure for lumbago :— Take a piece of oilskin cloth, such as is used for covering tables, but of a soft pliant kind, sufficiently large to cover the loins, place it over a flannel bandage ; profuse perspiration will ensue on the loins, and you are quickly rid of this troublesome complaint. In our advertising columns appears a an intimation from the Education Board, Wanganui, calling for tenders to erect a schoolhouse at Stanvray. The plans and specifications are now lying at the store of Mr Tompkins, Halcombe, for the inspection of intending contractors. Messrs Atkins and Clere, of Wanganui, are the architects. We learn from the Marlborough Daily Times that in consequence of a flood in the WakamhPina River, a wedding had to be postponed. When a couple on the Manchester Block have maae up their minds to be married, "a flood, a famine, and a fire " might frighten thorn, but it wouldn't stop the marriage. The Wakainarina was always a poor spirited place. A correspondent to the Ellesmere Guardian suggests that in all cases of public entertainment the local constable should be favored with a complimentary ticket to remind him of the desirableness of his presence to maintain order. The idea is a good one, and should find f;ivor in the eyes of those who are so often annoyed by unseemly interruptions from the larrikin class. The members of the old Kai Kai Troop of Volunteer Cavalry have determined to take up the cudgels on behalf of their former Capt. the Honble John Bryce, in connection with certain false statements made by Mr Eusd n in his history of JSew Zealand. A meeting is called at Mr F. R. Jackson's Sale Yards, Wanganui. for Wednesday, the 11th July, to consider the terms of a letter to be drawn up und forwarded to Mr Bryce. It is expected that every old member of the corps will either prt in an appearance at (he me'timj. or. if unable to' attend, to write to the chairmVui in.t ; mating his intention lo support the movement.
