Hop Growing.
The following is an extract from a letter published in the Wairarapa Standard, and will interest many of our readers : — June, July,' August-Continue to throw, sort or stack poles, or c'utin bush if none on hand, prepare ground by grubbing, digging, and draining, collect manure, drains should be four feet deep. September — Manure ground, young hops may be planted in holes about 20in. square, old plants should be pruned, commence poling. October — Continue polling, and hoe and thoroughly weed the ground. November— Dig ground a second time, commence tying, three bines to each pole. December — Cut off superfluous bines which lie on the ground, hill up the plants, manure again the weak ones with guano, and put a small pole if a big one is not required ; deeply hoe and pulverise the ground between the plants. January, Bebruary — Continue hilling and becking {that is, stirring the ground) and destroying weeds. Soil requires to be constantly stirred-."- * March — Hop picking.
