The Central Railway Route.
__*. A deputation consisting of the Hon. P. A. Buckley, and Messrs J. B. Harcourt (chairman of the Chamber of Commerce), G. Fisher, C. A. Baker, S. Christie, T. R. George, and J. Wallace, waited on the Minister for Publio Works yesterday with reference to the North Island Trunk Railway. Mr Harcourt pointed out the many advantages of the central route compared with that via Moiau, and urged the importance of the former being surveyed. Mr Johnston said he had intimated to the House last session that the Government would not decide which route to take till all the suggested routes were surveyed, so as to arrive at a decision as to that route showing the greatest suitability for settlement, and the most probable traffic and other advantages. He further said that it would not be possible for the Government to submit a resolution io the House on the matter this session, but that surveys were being made, and that he had engaged Mr Koch ford to do the central lioe, and thought he would be there by the next day. Mr Fisher having said that the explanation given by Mr Johnston was satisfactory, the deputation withdrew.
