[PEE UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION.! Chbistchxjbch, This Day. John Holden, a young man, dropped down dead this morning while washing himself. The cause is supposed to be heart disease. The Licensing Court for South East Christchurch refused to extend the hours beyond 11 o'clock, and also refused to license any new houses. Auckland, This Day. A number of gentlemen in Auckland intend to apply for tbe Puhipuhi Block, lately passed through the Native Land Court at Eawakawa, under the District Railways Act, to construct a railway which will join the line at Karoo, and ultimately go on to the Bay of Islands. Puhipuhi is a splendid forest of kauri, comprising hundreds of millions of feet* and the only great kauri forest not yet private property. Wellington, This Day. Mr Jenkins, of Crichton Park, farmer, has filed a declaration of insolvency. Debts are Btated to be £2*),255 ; assets, £2,073. The Licensing committee for Lambton Ward remarked to-day of the frequency of transfers, and said that in future they would be careful in granting transfers. Harrington, of Riverton, has backed out of the sculling match witb Hearn. The supporters of Hearn are indignant at Harrington refusing to meet their man after his throwing out the challenge.
